Nelson’s skilled brushwork captures the horse’s muscular form and flowing mane with remarkable detail, conveying a sense of both strength and grace. Leonardo da Vinci’s horse was a monumental project commissioned by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, in 1482. Da Vinci meticulously planned and designed the sculpture, intending for it to be the largest equestrian statue in the world. He created a full-size clay model, but the bronze intended for the casting was diverted to make cannons for Milan’s defense, leaving the project tragically unfinished. Centuries later, various artists and organizations worked to realize da Vinci’s vision, and a completed bronze sculpture based on his designs was finally unveiled in 1999.
