“Something” in the Air: A Surrealist Exploration of Longing and Musical Dreams

Robert Lyn Nelson’s “Something” is a transcendent piece from his acclaimed Beatles Tribute Series. The painting, inspired by the iconic Beatles song of the same name, weaves a surreal narrative of love, distance, and the ethereal power of music.

A woman, draped in a flowing gown, stands on a desolate shore, gazing across the water toward a majestic castle. Sheet music, bearing fragmented lyrics, swirls around her and a framed portrait of a woman—perhaps the subject of the song—hangs in the sky, further immersing the viewer in the melancholic beauty of the piece. A discarded rose and paintbrush lie at her feet, hinting at the artist’s struggle to capture the essence of the song’s poignant message. The vibrant sunset, reflecting in the tranquil water, casts a dreamlike glow over the scene, underscoring the timeless emotional resonance of “Something.”

“Something,” written by George Harrison, was released on the Beatles’ Abbey Road album in 1969. While often overshadowed by Lennon and McCartney’s songwriting contributions, “Something” is widely considered one of Harrison’s finest compositions and one of the greatest love songs of all time. Frank Sinatra famously called it “the greatest love song of the last 50 years,” further cementing its place in music history. It was unusual for the time, as Harrison wrote the song about someone other than his wife, Patti Boyd, apparently inspired by Ray Charles’ wife, although he later confirmed it was about Patti.
