“Thalo Moon”: Whispers of Wisdom from a Hawaiian Owl
Robert Lyn Nelson’s “Thalo Moon” presents a striking portrayal of a Pue’o, the short-eared Hawaiian owl, against a deep, velvety black backdrop. The owl’s plumage is rendered in a vibrant mosaic of blues, golds, and browns, echoing the rich hues of the partially eclipsed moon hanging in the upper left corner.
Nelson’s meticulous brushwork captures the intricate texture of the owl’s feathers, creating a sense of lifelike detail. The owl’s intense, forward gaze engages the viewer, inviting them to share in the quiet magic of the nocturnal scene.

About the Pue’o:
The Pue’o, or short-eared Hawaiian owl, holds a special place in Hawaiian culture as an ‘aumakua, or family guardian spirit. Mostly nocturnal, these owls are known for their soft, melodic calls and their role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Unlike many owl species, Pue’o also hunt during the day, soaring over the fields in search of prey. Nelson, inspired by the frequent visits of these auspicious birds to his Upcountry Maui studio, immortalized their beauty in this stunning work of art.
